Barcelona star would turn down January move to La Liga side
Barcelona goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains a tricky issue for all involved, with a crossfire of interests that currently is not benefitting anyone. The veteran shot-stopper is standing his ground though.
The 33-year-old is adamant that he wants to battle Joan Garcia for his spot in the side, despite the Catalan giants being keen to move ter Stegen and his large salary on. Meanwhile the German national side have been pushing ter Stegen towards a move too, noting that in order to be the number one at the World Cup, he will need game time. One of the reasons he is allegedly keen to stay at Barcelona is to be close to his children, who he supposedly fears losing custody of if he were to move away.
Ter Stegen would not move to Girona

It has been floated that ter Stegen could move to Girona, a little over an hour away from Barcelona. Their Catalan neighbours are on the hunt for a goalkeeper in January, with Dominik Livakovic set to leave, and it would allow ter Stegen to continue living in Barcelona, while getting game time. However Cadena SER (via Sport) have revealed that ter Stegen would not consider leaving the Blaugrana for Girona. He would only be interested in a departure for a side ‘of his level’, referring to one of Europe’s giants.

Barcelona’s options in January
While Barcelona have been keen to emphasize that they will not look to force ter Stegen out, a departure at least until the summer becomes more attractive following Andreas Christensen’s injury. Barcelona are scouring the market for potential defensive reinforcements, and can use the emergency injury rule to clear some space in their salary limit. Were they to be able to shift some of ter Stegen’s salary too, that would likely double their room for manoeuver in the January window.
