Ayo Dosunmu gets ‘most important free agent’ claim from Tim Connelly

The Minnesota Timberwolves’ season came to an end last week after their Game 6 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semifinals. As the offseason approaches, the Timberwolves’ focus will now turn to roster decision including the upcoming free agency for Ayo Dosunmu. And the front office has clearly made him a priority.

During an end of the season media availability, Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly expressed his belief that Ayo Dosunmu is the team’s top concern in free agency this offseason, as per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

“Ayo’s our most important free agent,” Connelly said. “He’s a guy we thought we knew pretty well and we liked him from afar. Now seeing him day-to-day, we love him.”

This is the first time in Dosunmu’s career that he will hit unrestricted free agency. And he certainly will draw plenty of suitors from around the league. He was originally acquired by the Wolves at the trade deadline in a deal involving the Chicago Bulls.

Dosunmu appeared in 24 games, including nine starts, after the trade deadline at a little over 28 minutes per game. He averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals with splits of 52.1 percent shooting from the field, 41.4 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 92.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

In the playoffs, Dosunmu alternated between starting and coming off the bench in the wake of Donte DiVincenzo’s season-ending ACL injury. Dosunmu also dealt with a calf injury that kept him out for the decisive Game 7 win against the Denver Nuggets in the opening round and Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semis.

During the Wolves’ postseason run, he averaged 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists with splits of 50 percent shooting from the field, 42.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 92.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
