Australia vs Egypt – Bet Builder Tips | 20-1 odds and prediction | talkSPORT
Australia have never won a World Cup knockout match and Egypt have never even played in one in the modern era (they lost in 1934 when Hungary put four past them). Now, the two sides will be looking for the win at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, with a last-16 date against Argentina or Cabo Verde waiting for the winner.
Both teams managed to reach the round of 32 as runners-up, and a potential match against Argentina (the most likely outcome) would be massive for both sides.
The straight 1X2 market is a bit of a trap here. Egypt are marginal favourites at around 7/5 and Australia are available to win at 23/10, plus the 90-minute draw sits at 7/4.
Egypt have the better star player in Mo Salah and the stronger goal difference, while Australia have the structure to slow down the pace and drag the game out to extra time and potentially penalties.
So, rather than just back a bare result, I’ve stacked three legs for a bet builder here that all feed off the same story, with Egypt controlling the game, Marmoush getting shots off on the Australian goal and Australia fouling to survive in the middle of the park.

Our 20/1 bet builder: Egypt to win, Marmoush shots, an Australia booking
Egypt are the better side on paper and they will see more of the ball, which funnels their attacking output through Omar Marmoush, their central striker and their most reliable route to goal whether or not Salah plays.
And the more Egypt press, the more that a deep-lying Australian defense has to foul in the midfield to try and stop attacks from getting going, which is where the cards will come from.

Australia vs Egypt bet builder breakdown
Egypt to win
Why: Egypt are the better footballing side, and Australia have shown me almost nothing going forward in this tournament so far.
After scoring twice in their opener, the Socceroos failed to find the net in back-to-back games, and three of their last five overall have ended with them hitting blanks. Tony Popovic’s side beat Türkiye 2-0, then lost 2-0 to the USA and ground out a 0-0 with Paraguay.
Egypt, by contrast, went unbeaten in a group containing Belgium, and five different players scored across their three matches, so this is not a one-man team, whatever the Salah headlines might continue to say about the Liverpool legend.
Stat: Australia mustered an xG average of just 0.69 per 90 across the group stage. A side creating that little against Egypt’s organised defence is relying on a set piece or a mistake.

Omar Marmoush 2+ shots on target
Why: This is the Salah-proof leg of my bet builder, and that’s actually the point. With Salah’s fitness in the balance, the goalscoring burden falls on Manchester City’s Marmoush, who is quick, clinical, and well placed to punish an Australia side that will be inviting pressure over the 90.
Egypt funnel their attack through the middle, Marmoush leads the line, and if Salah misses out the Man City man becomes the focal point.
Stat: Egypt controlled 61% of the ball in their draw with Iran and have been the more assured side in possession all tournament. A striker seeing that much territory, against a team that sits deep, should hit the target more than once.
Bet on Omar Marmoush to have 2+ shots on target at 12/5 with Sky Bet
Alessandro Circati to be carded
Why: Australia’s whole plan tonight is going to be slowing the game down as much as possible, breaking up transitions and turning the game into a physical battle. I expect them to try and keep a compact shape and to try and turn this match into a drag-out stop-start affair.
Centre-backs defending deep against Marmoush’s movement and Salah’s darting runs will get them dragged into committing cynical fouls and Circati is the one I’d back to pick up the booking.
Stat: Circati has already been shown a card once in three group games, and he’s the centre-back most likely to be isolated as Egypt push bodies forward. It’s worth noting the risk here though, as Popovic rotates relentlessly (he made six changes against the USA) so Circati isn’t nailed-on to start.
If you’d rather not gamble on the team sheet, Cameron Devlin at 13/5 is the alternative if you’re expecting a midfield enforcer to see yellow instead.

How to place Australia vs Egypt bet builder
Getting these three legs onto one slip takes just under a minute on the Sky Bet app, and it’s really simple.
- You just need to open the app and search Australia v Egypt in the World Cup section.
- Tap into the match, then select the BuildABet tab rather than the standard markets, as that’s what lets you combine a result, a player shots line and a card in a single price.
- Add Egypt to win from the match result market, then Marmoush 2+ shots on target from the player shots list, then Circati from the player-to-be-carded market.
The combined odds update live at the bottom of the screen as you go.
Before you confirm, you need to do two things.
Double-check the slip, as it’s easy to tap “1+ shots” instead of “2+” and quietly wreck your price. And shop around, because multi-leg builders vary more between bookmakers than singles do, so it pays to see whether Cash Out availability and the final number stack up elsewhere before you commit.
If Salah’s team news drops in your favour before kickoff, you might also swap the card leg for Salah to score or assist at evens if you prefer.
Stats that matter for your bet
- Supports Egypt to win: Australia have failed to score in two of their three World Cup games and have posted an xG of around 0.69 per 90.
- Supports Marmoush 2+ shots on target: Egypt kept four clean sheets in their last eight matches and conceded only once per game in the group stage, showing a controlled side that lets its striker work.
- Supports an Australia booking: the Socceroos’ route to competitiveness is causing physical disruption of Egypt’s attacking moments, and that means having to commit fouls in dangerous areas.
- Team news / swing factor: Salah’s hamstring is a genuine late call, so if he starts he transforms Egypt’s attack, and if not, Zizo deputises with Marmoush shouldering the threat. Australia have lost Jacob Italiano and Mathew Leckie for the tournament.
Why we are backing this bet builder
Because Australia struggle to score (and the data backs that up), they’ll defend deep and try to make it ugly.
Because Egypt are the more assured side on the ball, they’ll try and dominate territory and feed Marmoush for the full 90.
Because a deep, outmatched defence has to foul to survive, a booking for a centre-back like Circati is going to be very likely.
Egypt wins, Marmoush shoots (a lot), Australia scrap and concede a card, the script kind of writes itself.
However, I’m not pretending like this betting offer is risk free. The Salah situation could reshape Egypt’s attack, Australia are stubborn enough to force extra time, and the card leg leans on a rotation-prone team sheet.
But at an indicative bet builder of around 20/1 with Sky Bet (correct as of writing), the three legs pay for those risks.

For balance, here’s the straight result market across a few different sportsbooks so you can see where the value sits before adding builder legs. bet365 have firmed Egypt since the group stage, rating them the tidier of the two sides.

- Draw – 15/8 with bet365
- Australia win – 12/5 with Paddy Power

Australia vs Egypt match prediction and line-ups
My Australia vs Egypt prediction is a tight, cagey knockout that Egypt just get past with a moment of quality, ie. a Salah dart or a Marmoush finish, rather than a comfortable win.
Australia will be desperate to grind out a draw, but the African side’s superior quality should shine through in a tightly contested win. Squad depth matters in the final 20 minutes of a knockout tie, and that’s where Egypt’s edge will probably tell.
Prediction: Australia 0-1 Egypt
Australia Predictions: Popovic doesn’t have a fixed side and rotates heavily, so treat the front line as fluid. Irankunda and Metcalfe scored the group-stage goals but have been in and out.
- Australia predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Beach; Circati, Souttar, Herrington; Bos, O’Neill, Irvine, Behich; Volpato, Metcalfe; Irankunda
Egypt Predictions: The one dilemma that overrides all others is Salah. IF he is fit then he slots into the number 10 role; leave him out and Egypt lose their sharpest edge but will likely keep their shape. Make sure that you watch the team news at 18:00 BST, as it swings this tie more than any odds movement will.
- Egypt predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Shobeir; Hany, Rabia, Ibrahim, Hafez; Lasheen, Attia; Zico, Ashour, Trezeguet; Marmoush.
