England will be out for revenge in Brisbane with the second Ashes Test starting in the early hours of Thursday morning following what turned out to be a thrashing by Australia in the first Test in Perth.

Ben Stokes’ England side had got themselves into a fantastic position in first Test, at one point 65/1 on the second day with a lead of 105, only to be all out for 164 and see Australia chase down 205 inside 30 overs with one of the all-time Ashes centuries from Travis Head before the end of day two.

Almost two weeks on from the end of the first Test, Ben Stokes has announced a surprise call up to the XI for Will Jacks, the part-time spinning all-rounder who has just two Test caps to his name, and none since the tour of Pakistan in 2022.

Jacks comes in for Mark Wood, leaving England still with a four-pronged pace attack and enabling the white-ball star to come in to offer a bit of spin, that perhaps might not be so essential in a pink-ball day/night Test Match, and will supposedly bat at number eight, leaving Brydon Carse at 10 and Jofra Archer at 11.

Australia have a small selection decision of their own to make, with Travis Head likely to keep his role at the top of the batting order after his match-winning century, particularly with Usman Khawaja ruled out after not recovering from his back problems that hampered his first Test performance.

Head’s move up the order and Khawaja’s unavailability means a spot has opened up in the middle order, with one of either wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis or tall seam-bowling all-rounder Beau Webster likely to fill the void, in what will likely be the only change for the hosts.

bet365 customers are favouring Australia in the 2nd Test with 74% of the ‘To Win Match’ stakes placed on the home side for the Brisbane day/night clash.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Brisbane is traditionally a stronghold for Australia and punters are backing the hosts after their blink-and-you-miss-it first Test triumph in Perth.

“Mitchell Starc recorded a 10-wicket haul in the Ashes opener, but worryingly for England his figures with a pink ball in day/night Tests are far superior than in day/red ball matches and he could once again have a field day under the lights at the Gabba.”
