Atletico Madrid v Tottenham prediction

Tottenham make the trip to Spanish capital on Tuesday night desperately short on confidence after falling to defeat in each of their last five matches, leaving them sat precariously just one point above the relegation zone in the Premier League table.

Igor Tudor’s side might be relieved at the change in competition on Tuesday after a torrid few months on the domestic scene, curiously a stark contrast to their European campaign this season.

Spurs finished fourth in the league phase table of the Champions League after winning five of their eight matches, losing only one, making the competition a happy distraction from their Premier League troubles.

Three of the north London side’s last four victories in all competitions have come in the Champions League since early December, with wins over Slavia Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt sending the club comfortably into the last 16 of the competition for the first time in six years.

Atletico Madrid prepare for the visit of Tottenham having won four of their last five matches in all competitions following a 3-2 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday evening to keep them third in the La Liga table.

Diego Simeone’s side have won each of their last four matches at their home stadium, scoring 15 goals in the process, including heavy victories over Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi final and Club Brugge in the second leg of their knockout phase play-off.

The latter results means the Spanish side have now reached the last 16 of the Champions in 11 of the last 13 seasons, including seven of their last eight and will head into their bout with Spurs as favourites to reach the last four.

The two teams have only met once before in a competitive environment, coming to blows in the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup final in Rotterdam, which saw Tottenham romp home to a 5-1 victory against the defending champions, becoming the first English team to win a UEFA competition.

Atletico head into tonight’s match in much the better form with four wins and five ahead of their match against a Spurs side in crisis, so should see a relatively comfortable home win tonight, perhaps 2-0 the most likely scoreline.

Atletico Madrid v Tottenham betting tips

Sorry Spurs’ woes continue

Tottenham have lost their last five matches in all competitions, while Atletico have won four of their last five, their only blemish on that record a defeat at the Nou Camp in a semi final they still progressed through on aggregate.

Simeone’s side have won their last four matches at the Metropolitano, scoring 15 goals in the process.

Sorloth to strike again

Alexander Sorloth has scored more goals this season than any other player on either team after he bagged his 16th of the campaign in all competitions by netting the opener in Saturday’s win over Real Sociedad.

The former Crystal Palace striker has scored six goals in his last five games for Atletico Madrid, having netted a Champions League hat trick in their last European outing, the second leg of their knockout phase play-off against Club Brugge.

Micky in the book

Micky van de Ven has received more cards than any other player on either team this season following his straight red card against Crystal Palace last Thursday night.

The sending was the Tottenham defender’s 11th card of the campaign, and the ensuing suspension is only a domestic one, leaving the Dutchman free to play in Tuesday’s match in Madrid.
