Yves Bissouma in action for Tottenham Hotspur during a pre-season match

Former Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma is set to join Ajax three months after his contract expired at the end of last season.

Bissouma departed Spurs in June after four years at the club, with him becoming a free agent and eyeing his next move.

talkSPORT reported in July that Fulham and new boss Alvaro Arbeloa were showing an interest in signing the Mali international.

He was understood to be keen on staying in the Premier League this season, but he also had multiple offers from overseas clubs.

And now he's on the brink of joining Ajax on a free transfer.

Bissouma on the brink

According to De Telegraaf in the Netherlands, Bissouma reached an agreement with Ajax on Tuesday afternoon.

The 30-year-old is already in Amsterdam for his medical.

He is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Dutch giants, who will reportedly also have an option to extend by a year.

Ajax are currently sitting fifth in the Eredivisie, having won three, lost one and drawn one of their opening five games.

Now managed by Spanish boss Michel, they are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing last campaign.

The 36-time champions finished fifth in the table, meaning they only qualified for the Conference League.

That does mean though, that Bissouma will be playing European football on his return following three months unattached.

Why did Bissouma leave Spurs?

Bissouma was not offered another contract to stay on at Tottenham after his deal expired at the end of last season.

And that didn't come as a surprise, having only played 11 times in all competitions for the club across the campaign.

A knee injury plagued his final year in England, with multiple off-the-pitch issues impacting his Spurs spell.

Bissouma was left out of Tottenham's UEFA Super Cup tie against Paris Saint-Germain last summer by then manager Thomas Frank due to his 'ill-discipline'.

He had turned up late many times and Frank dropped him to show the basic standards he demanded in his squad.

That came after the midfielder was banned by Spurs for posting a video of himself inhaling nitrous oxide on social media.

And even after his Super Cup snub, he was allegedly filmed using a nitrous oxide balloon for a second time.

Bissouma later explained that that misdemeanour was brought on by 'paranoia' after thieves broke into his home.

He then left the club this summer after making 111 appearances in total for Tottenham across his four-year stint.
