With the New York Yankees now in the offseason after losing in the ALDS to the Tampa Bay Rays, the team will have some decisions to make in the winter. As rumors will continue to surround the Yankees ahead of the offseason, one MLB insider discusses the possibility of the team trading Luis Garcia Jr., who was acquired last year by New York from the Washington Nationals.
Last season, Garcia produced on an impressive level, recording a cumulative .277 batting average with 30 home runs and 92 RBIs, whereas in the 43 games played with the Yankees, he had a .264 average, seven home runs and 16 RBIs. Joel Sherman spoke on “Pinstripe Post,” via The New York Post, and pontificated Garcia being a trade chip since he will be a free agent in 2027, and threw out a team that could use him.
“He's a free agent after the 2027 season; we are probably going to get, if not a salary cap, some tougher penalties for the upper end of payrolls. And I can't imagine the Yankees would probably figure they're going to have to pay Ben Rice at some point, re-signing another like player long term for big money. So, do you get out ahead of it, and say, does he solve third base? Does he get us a big reliever?
“The Diamondbacks had literally the worst first base production in the major leagues last year. They have some interesting arms in their bullpen that they control,” Sherman continued. “Can the Yankees get access to a guy who pitches in the last six outs of the game who has multiple years of control for a first baseman?”

At any rate, it remains to be seen if New York decides to trade Garcia or not this offseason.
