Anthony Gill celebrated his 34th birthday on Saturday by locking up his place with the Washington Wizards for another season. The veteran forward entered training camp on an Exhibit 9 contract, but the team said Gill has claimed Washington’s 15th and final roster spot, according to Marc Stein. The decision extends his tenure with the Wizards to a seventh season.
The move came alongside a round of cuts. Washington announced it has waived guard Trevor Keels, forward Chris Livingston and guard Alondes Williams as it trimmed the roster ahead of Monday’s deadline for teams to set their Opening Night rosters.
It is a familiar position for Gill, who has rarely had a guaranteed path in Washington. The Wizards waived him in June 2025 before his $2.5 million salary for the 2025-26 season became guaranteed, only to bring him back on a one-year deal in August. He re-signed again in September, filling the last open spot on the roster heading into camp.
Gill made the most of his chance last season. He appeared in 55 games with eight starts, averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 62.8% from the field in 17.3 minutes per night, his most active season in Washington.
His value goes well beyond the box score. Gill is the longest-tenured player on the roster, and the front office and coaching staff have praised his mentorship of young players and his willingness to play almost any frontcourt role. Tre Johnson, then a rookie, said last season that Gill “helps more off the court than on the court.”
Gill took an unusual path to the NBA. He went undrafted out of Virginia in 2016 and spent four seasons overseas in Turkey and Russia before signing with Washington in December 2020. He made his NBA debut as a 28-year-old rookie that season and has spent his entire NBA career with the Wizards.
Article Continues BelowFor a young Washington team, having a veteran voice who has seen nearly every version of the franchise over the past six seasons carries real value, especially with expectations rising in the nation’s capital.
Gill and the Wizards open the regular season at home against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
