The Minnesota Wild are skating into the 2026-27 season with some momentum, after posting a playoff series win this past season. Minnesota is extending the contract of their head coach, John Hynes. Hynes signed a multiyear deal with the Wild, per NHL.com.

“In his three seasons with Minnesota, Hynes is 125-78-24 and has guided it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs twice, including its first series win last season since 2015. He is 7-10 in the postseason with the Wild,” the outlet reported.

Minnesota won its first series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2015, when the team defeated the Dallas Stars. The Wild then bowed to the Colorado Avalanche.

“John did a great job this year,” Wild general manager Bill Guerin said, per The Athletic. “I’m a big believer in John and what he does and how he operates. I see it firsthand. Not just the amount of work that goes into it, because anybody can sit at a desk and a computer for hours upon time and say they did a lot of work. To me, that’s fine. It’s the detail of which he does it in. If you could have seen the detail of the work and the time that these guys put in in between Game 2 and 3, to make those adjustments, to deliver the message to the team.”

Hynes is a well-traveled coach. He has also spent time coaching the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils. He led both of those franchises to the playoffs as well.

Hynes has 409 total victories as a NHL head coach. He was about to enter the last year of his contract with Minnesota, before this announcement.

The Wild start NHL preseason games on Saturday, when they play the Chicago Blackhawks. The regular season starts for the club in October.
