Talent wasn't what the San Antonio Spurs were missing when they fell short in the 2026 NBA Finals. They faltered late in games, perhaps due to the team's lack of experience, and they ended up losing to the New York Knicks in five games even though they held a double-digit lead in every single contest of the series. They addressed this issue this offseason by adding veteran forward Tobias Harris to give the team another steady hand and a solid locker room presence.

Harris signed a two-year, $31 million contract to join the Spurs in free agency, and it makes sense for him to slot into the starting lineup. While he's not a game-changing presence by any means, he gives San Antonio another battle-tested veteran, a reliable shot-creator, and another wing-sized player who can bring more stability to this young team.

The 34-year-old is excited for what this Spurs team can achieve, as he believes they can build off of their incredible run last season and perhaps even get over the hump.

“The potential of this group, this team, this organization. The sky's the limit and I'm looking forward to being here helping out this group in the best way possible,” Harris said during Media Day, via the official NBA account on X.

Harris showed when he signed with the Detroit Pistons in 2024 just how important of a presence he can be for a young team. When the game slows down, he can manufacture his own shot. He gives the Spurs another dimension to their offense, all while knowing that he will be taking a backseat to rising stars such as Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

Last season, Harris averaged 13.3 points on 47/37/87 shooting splits while playing 27.7 minutes per contest. He figures to play a similar role, although with Julian Champagnie, Keldon Johnson, and Harrison Barnes all candidates for minutes off the bench as well, Harris might settlt into a lesser role with a more stacked team.
