DeForest Buckner is returning to the San Francisco 49ers after the Indianapolis Colts traded the veteran defensive tackle in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick. Not only is 49ers tight end George Kittle excited about Buckner’s arrival, but former NFL star Richard Sherman also praised the move, describing it as a steal for San Francisco.

During an episode of his “Richard Sherman Podcast,” Sherman expressed his excitement about Buckner’s addition.

“49ers are bringing the boys back home. Brought back Debo Samuel, brought back Dre Greenlaw, and now bring back DeForest Buckner,” Sherman said. ‘Eric Armstead, you better be looking at your phone because that's what kind of year it seems like for the San Francisco 49ers.

“I think that's an incredible addition, a big time addition to a guy that's gonna make a great difference on this team. And they got him for only a 2027 fourth round pick. That's a steal.”

Buckner began his NFL career in San Francisco after the 49ers selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Colts in March 2020 in exchange for a first-round draft pick.

Buckner’s return should provide an immediate boost to San Francisco’s interior defensive line. He started all seven games for Indianapolis this season, recording 31 tackles and four sacks while continuing to demonstrate his ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks.

Across his seven seasons with the Colts, Buckner recorded 47 sacks, 122 quarterback hits and six forced fumbles. He also earned first-team AP All-Pro honors in 2020 and was selected to the Pro Bowl twice.

Buckner’s experience and familiarity with the 49ers could also help him adjust to the defensive system quickly. With San Francisco holding a 6-1 record and competing for the NFC West title, the veteran defensive tackle gives the team another established presence.

The 49ers are now set to take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
