Brooklyn Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. isn't coming off his minutes restriction “anytime soon.” The No. 6 pick played 20 minutes off the bench during his NBA debut on Wednesday. Jordi Fernandez explained on Friday why Brown will remain on his minutes limit moving forward.
“[The minutes restriction] is not going to change in a way. He played 19 games last year, I believe. This season is 82,” Fernandez said following the Nets' practice. “We're going to build him to be healthy and to be a strong NBA player. We have a plan for him. Obviously we're not going to disclose every single step of the way, but the number one thing is to build him up and build up his body to be able to sustain the minutes that can help the team win games.”
Fernandez said Brown will keep coming off the bench until the team raises his minutes limit. Do the Nets have a specific date in mind, provided the rookie doesn't suffer a setback?
“I didn't go to school for that. I'm guessing you guys understand that we have a plan for our medical and performance [team],” Fernandez replied. “It's how it is until we change it. The sample size has got to be way bigger. It's not just one game and then, ‘Oh, he's good to go.’ It's a lot of games and minutes of load that his body can assimilate before we feel like he can take steps. So obviously at some point he'll be able to play more minutes, he'll be able to play back-to-backs, but it's not right now or anytime soon.”

Brown sprained his ankle the week before Nets training camp, which opened on Sept. 28. He also missed the second half of his freshman season at Louisville with a back injury.

The back injury likely factors into Brooklyn's decision to bring Brown along slowly. Fernandez recently spoke about the intense workload rookies face during the summer before their rookie season.
“The reality is when you get drafted, it's a very tough summer. You do all these workouts right into Summer League. You almost don't have a break, and then you go into training camp,” the Nets coach said. “And that's why we always say the most important summer is that next summer, because you can work the whole way through and focus on your body… And then I think you're more equipped, plus you have the experience under your belt. But that first summer, you just throw them into the fire. So we just want to be careful. And one of the reasons why Mikel is in that minutes restriction is because we have to be careful with him and not get too excited. And I think that's the right thing to do for him and for the team.”
The Nets rookie hasn't looked physically hampered during his first two appearances.
Brown was among the best players on the court during his Nets debut in the team's preseason finale. He scored 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting with three assists, two steals and just one turnover in 18 minutes.

Brown continued to flash his athleticism during the Nets' regular-season opener on Wednesday, a 110-103 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. The 6-foot-4 guard scored six points on 2-of-8 shooting with three assists and one turnover. He elevated above the rim and scored an and-one layup for his first bucket before nearly throwing down a poster dunk over Naz Reid minutes later.
