The Minnesota Vikings have looked incredible early in the 2026 NFL season. Minnesota is 3-0 headed into Week 4 and sits proudly atop the NFC North division standings. The Vikings will do battle with an inferior opponent this weekend, which could tempt them to rest their best offensive playmaker.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport gave an injury update on Justin Jefferson, suggesting it would make sense if he did not play in Week 4.

“[Jefferson] is dealing with an ankle injury, has not practiced yet this week. They have the Dolphins whose record is, you know, not very good,” Rapoport said on Friday via Good Morning Football. “And then they have a bye week. It would make a lot of sense if they took him off the field, just let him fully heal for the stretch run. More information coming on that today.”

Rapoport did not specifically report that Jefferson will not play this weekend. However, the logic he laid out sounds pretty reasonable.

Jefferson picked up an ankle injury against the Buccaneers early in the game. He spent a great deal of time in the blue medical tent before going back to the locker room. After halftime, Minnesota ruled Jefferson out for the rest of the game.

The Vikings played it very safe with Jefferson during the game. That suggests they will keep the same cautious approach with his Week 4 status, just like they have throughout this week of practice.

As Rapoport noted, this is the perfect week to rest Jefferson without worrying about a loss. The Dolphins are 0-3 and just lost their best offensive player in De'Von Achane. Minnesota should not be worried about losing to arguably the worst team in the NFL.

Minnesota has a Week 5 matchup with New Orleans before their Week 6 bye. If the Vikings let Jefferson rest for multiple weeks, he would likely return refreshed in Week 7 against the Colts.

It will be interesting to see Jefferson's injury status when injury reports come out on Friday afternoon.

Vikings vs. Dolphins kicks off at 4:05 p.m. ET on Oct. 4 from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
