Bo Nix entered the NFL as the sixth quarterback drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft class. Despite that, he has emerged as the best statistical performer and the most consistent winner among his QB peers. Just last season, Nix led the Denver Broncos to a deep playoff run, but a last-second ankle injury prevented him from competing in the AFC Championship Game and, therefore, all but eliminated the Broncos' hopes of making the Super Bowl.

Fully recovered from offseason surgery, though, Nix was expected to have a big third year in Denver, especially with a young, innovative mind like Davis Webb taking over play calling duties. That has not been the case through a month of football, though. The Denver defense is still great, and Nix and the offense remain uber clutch, but the team hasn't been able to put points on the board in the first half of games.

Some fans and analysts have blamed the young quarterback; others have blamed the young offensive coordinator. Dan Orlovsky takes the former opinion.

“I don't know the why between how come the play design and play call is there, early on in the game, and the route and design wins, and Bo Nix just doesn't throw the football,” Orlovsky said on the Pat McAfee show… “There is a disconnect right now early on in games with why we're calling the play, where our eyes should be, why we're getting to it in that moment, and I think that is the biggest issue right now to start the game… I can't put yesterday all on Davis Webb. Yesterday is way more Bo Nix and [him] not pulling the trigger on routes that are there.”

Sean Payton was the play caller during Nix's first two seasons. While fans sometimes criticized a sometimes boring style of play that Payton implemented, he was a proven play caller with an impressive track record. With Webb, the offense hasn't been as effective, and it is hard to know if that is on the scheme or the quarterback himself. Either way, the Broncos are 2-2 despite having a tough schedule to begin the year. They suffered a number of injuries in Week 4 that won't help them break out in the coming weeks, though.
