Going into the offseason, the 20-year-old VJ Edgecombe would have refused to believe that he was soon going to be teammates with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, particularly the former. The 41-year-old LeBron is not only more than twice the age Edgecombe is, he also has a son who is older than the Philadelphia 76ers’ lottery pick.
And well, Edgecombe himself appears to be reasonably flabbergasted with the notion, per a post on X by ClutchPoints. Asked whether he ever thought James would end up being his teammate, he had a straightforward answer.
“Nah,” he said. “[LeBron James is] exactly old enough to be my dad, which is crazy. I ain't gonna lie. His son is older than me, which is crazy.”

James will be entering his 24th year in the NBA, which is also more than Edgecombe’s age, and obviously has an older son playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. There is little doubt that James’ 24th season is going to be a first in multiple ways, and the four-time champion has already set a range of records related to longevity. Still, Edgecombe would have spent most of his childhood idolizing James, and is unlikely to even remember the early part of the former Cleveland Cavaliers' superstar's career.
However, that does not mean LeBron looks set to be reduced to a smaller role on the 76ers. While he appeared to embrace being the third option on the Lakers last season, James appeared in several games where he was his team’s first offensive option and actually led the Lakers in the postseason in the absence of both Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.
Article Continues BelowAt 41, there is no doubt that LeBron will miss several regular-season games and will instead focus on being healthy for the postseason. That is also set to bode well with Edgecombe himself, who on paper appears to be set for a reduced role next season due to the arrivals of LeBron, Brown, and even Dean Wade.
However, Edgecombe appears to be taking the challenge in his stride, and will undoubtedly be excited about competing for the title for the first time in his NBA career next season.
