In what could be a major disaster for the Chicago White Sox, they failed in their two attempts to close out the Cleveland Guardians at home in the ALDS. After losing Game 3 by six runs, 9-3, the White Sox did not fare much better on Thursday as they lost by four runs, 9-5, to set up a do-or-die contest in Cleveland for Game 5 on Saturday.

It was a six-run sixth inning that proved to be the difference for the Guardians on the night. Cleveland, in particular, beat up on White Sox reliever Grant Taylor, as they scored five of their runs with him on the mound.

Taylor came on in a tie game (4-4) and allowed the runner he inherited to score courtesy of a single from Patrick Bailey to give the Guardians the lead. Even more disaster ensued after that. Taylor walked two consecutive batters to load the bases, allowed two consecutive singles to give Cleveland two more runs to push their lead to three, and then Jo Adell kept the line moving with a two-run single to put the game out of the White Sox's reach.

Now raring to get the chance to redeem himself, Taylor made his status for Game 5 of the White Sox-Guardians ALDS clash clear.

“Yeah, I’m going to be available for anything. If they want me to go nine, then go for it. I’m going to do everything in the next couple of days to be ready to go,” Taylor said, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

It will be all hands on deck for the White Sox on Saturday with their season now on the line and a trip to the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays up for grabs. Thursday night was uncharacteristically poor for Taylor anyway, as he finished the 2026 regular season with an ERA of 2.25 in 84.0 innings (60 games, four starts).

Moreover, Taylor didn't allow a single run in his two previous appearances in the ALDS against the Guardians, allowing just three hits in 5.1 innings.

The White Sox will need Taylor to be at his best with their backs now against the wall.
