The Detroit Red Wings have not had a good start to life in 2026-27. They were shut out on home ice against the New York Rangers in their season opener. Simon Edvinsson reportedly wants a trade away from the team, joining former captain Dylan Larkin in that regard. Unfortunately, Todd McLellan and his team were unable to get things on track against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

The Jets dominated the Red Wings, especially on special teams. Winnipeg claimed a 3-2 win, giving Stuart Skinner his first win with the franchise. After the game, McLellan pointed to a couple factors that led to Detroit's demise in this contest.

“The penalty kill failed us,” McLellan said, via NHL.com. “I thought 5-on-5, we created more chances than we did against the Rangers, but we have to find a way to finish.”

The Jets raced out to a 3-0 lead in this game through the second period. Winnipeg controlled a lot of this game. They were especially able to contribute to the power play. Two of their goals came with the man advantage.

The Red Wings did show some fight in this game, though. Viktor Arvidsson scored his first goal as a Red Wing in the second period. This was also the team's first goal of the season. Emmitt Finnie scored later on in the game to make it 3-2.

Detroit was unable to pull away with a win. But if they can build on their comeback effort in this game, that could bode well for their upcoming contests. Detroit will go for its first win of the season on Tuesday night when they take on the Ottawa Senators.
