'We're very lucky to have him': Brendon McCullum endorses Kevin Pietersen as England white-ball mentor

Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as specialist mentor to England's men's white-ball teams, the ECB confirmed on September 7, 2026. The role takes effect from England's T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on September 15, 2026.

Pietersen's appointment spans 12 months and runs through to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. This marks his first formal involvement with the England senior setup since his international playing career ended in 2014.

England head coach Brendon McCullum was the driving force behind the appointment. McCullum described how he personally reached out to Pietersen and addressed the former captain's own reservations about joining the setup.

"I rang Kev [Pietersen] and said, do you want to come and help us challenge for a World Cup? He said, I was just criticising you a lot, not long ago. I said, I don't care about that. Some of it's fair and some of it would need some explanation, but I have no problem with that. I think it's healthy when you create an environment where you're able to challenge, as long as you're always trying to think of what's right for the team and trying to help the team to achieve what you want. There's no problem having that kind of challenge. The energy he's brought to the group already has been immense," McCullum said on BBC Test Match Special.

Why did McCullum push for Pietersen's inclusion?

McCullum was keen to bring Pietersen's experience into the white-ball setup despite the fact that Pietersen had been publicly critical of the England team in the past. McCullum initiated the approach himself and made clear that he viewed such external challenge as a healthy part of building a competitive environment. Pietersen joins a high-profile coaching staff that already includes Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.

"I feel very privileged for us to be able to have him as a resource within our dressing room. He was obviously a brilliant cricketer. He viewed the game quite differently. He was a winner and he was a guy who left no stone unturned when it came to his preparation. I think for us, we're very lucky to have him as part of our support staff," McCullum added.

What does Pietersen bring to England's World Cup preparations?

Pietersen's South African upbringing and familiarity with conditions in that region are expected to be relevant as England prepare for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. His knowledge of those environments is seen as a practical asset for the squad during the 12-month tenure.

Before this appointment, Pietersen had most recently served as a mentor for Delhi Capitals during the 2025 Indian Premier League. His return to an England role in any capacity is his first since he was left out of the international setup following the end of his playing career in 2014. The Sri Lanka series beginning September 15 will be his first assignment in the new position.
