Oregon football was unlikely to stump a top-notch Ohio State defense straight up, especially in the face of an unrelenting Columbus crowd. Dylan Raiola is coming off a fabulous outing versus Northwestern, but a little creativity is still needed. Dan Lanning and the Ducks disoriented the Buckeyes late in the first half with a trick play, and what ensued was a seismic shift in momentum.

Showing a punting formation on fourth-and-9 on its own 31-yard line, Oregon snapped the ball to senior linebacker Teitum Tuioti, who ran briefly before passing the ball to Jalen Lott. The freshman wide receiver sprinted across swaths of open space and then hurdled over a defender to cap off a 30-yard reception. Down 14-3 with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, the Ducks were seemingly about to cede possession to Ohio State. Instead, through masterful misdirection and enormous guts, they flipped the game.

Dierre Hill Jr. scored on a 9-yard rushing touchdown with 1:25 left in the second quarter. Oregon picked off Buckeyes quarterback Luke Fahey on the next drive and ended the half with a Jamari Johnson 2-yard sneak TD run. One more Ohio State score, and this game would have been out of hand before the break. Stunningly, the Ducks went into the locker room up 17-14. Hill stretched the lead to begin the third via a 48-yard rushing touchdown.

Oregon punctured gaping holes in a Matt Patricia-coached defense that showed signs of vulnerability last Saturday versus USC. One play should not destroy a squad, especially when they are leading, but the Ducks' perfectly designed fake punt completely changed the complexion of this Big Ten matchup.

Ingenuity is a boon to those who wield it, and a curse to those victimized by it.
