With the Golden State Warriors preparing for training camp right around the corner, head coach Steve Kerr will be preparing for his 13th season in the NBA as head coach for the franchise. As the Warriors look ahead to the preseason and the regular season ahead, Kerr would give insight into the mental battle he was having when deciding if he wanted to retire or not.

Kerr would be featured on the “Tom Tolbert Show,” where he spoke about the thought of retiring, even saying that within the last few weeks of the regular season last year, he was ready to do it. However, he gave himself a few weeks after the season to let the emotions simmer, and eventually decided to keep going.

“I had decided I was leaving with a week or two left in the regular season, I just thought, ‘It’s just time,’ I could feel it. I didn’t say anything to anybody, but I just thought, ‘Yeah, this is it.’ Just felt like it,” Kerr said.

“And then when the season ended, we all felt like we owed it to ourselves to give it a couple weeks and let the emotions die down and then hash it out and see where we were and where the team was,” Kerr continued. “And I’m glad we did that … and I just think we (the front office and Kerr) came to a really good conclusion, and agreement, that we should keep it going.”

Steve Kerr on the upcoming Warriors season

Kerr would continue talking about deciding not to retire, saying that he is “glad” it ended up that way, expressing how “fired up” he is for the upcoming season. The four-time title-winning coach would emphasize how “reenergized” and “rejuvenated” he is for Golden State.

“But I’m pretty confident that we can have a really good season. Our coaching staff has been preparing all summer, young guys (have been) in the gym…So it’s exciting to be back,” Kerr said.

Kerr and the Warriors look to improve after finishing with a 37-45 record, putting them 10th in the Western Conference.
