Despite heavily flirting with the idea of retirement, Steve Kerr is returning as the Golden State Warriors' head coach for his 13th season at the helm. But, even with much of the core remaining the same, Kerr promises that changes will be made moving forward.

Amid a 37-45 season, his second-worst since beginning his coaching career in 2014, Kerr seriously considered — and even made up his mind about — retiring in the offseason. However, and despite failing to land any big-name players in free agency or in a trade, including LeBron James, Kerr decided to come back to Golden State by signing a two-year contract.

On the ‘Tom Tolbert Show,' Kerr explained that although he will keep coaching, he doesn't want it to be the same old Warriors this coming season.

“I think ultimately we just kind of concluded that it made perfect sense for me to stay, you know, with Dray[mond Green] back, with Steph[en Curry] back, with a veteran team,” Kerr said. “But I wanted them to know that we've got to make some changes. And I'm looking in the mirror first; we've got to do things differently. And I think they appreciated that I came in with some thoughts and some ideas of how we needed to change some of our process. And on top of that, from their perspective, we had to change some of the expectations too, given everything that happened last year injury-wise. We got hit pretty hard, and it was a tough spot to be in. So let's kind of reset this thing this summer. And we agree. We sort of came to a really good place where I think we feel like we're in transition. We understand that, and I think we're all on the same page.”

Kerr is 604-353 and has won four NBA championships in 12 seasons with the Warriors. Since their 2022 title, though, the Warriors have not reached the conference finals, and in two of those seasons, they missed the playoffs entirely.

While Kerr's contract runs through the end of the 2027-28 season, the current deals for the aging trio of Curry (38), Green (36), and Jimmy Butler (37) all expire next summer, which could make for another big ‘transition' for Golden State.
