UCLA football overcame one big injury scare involving backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach against Michigan State. Now coach Bob Chesney can breathe out more relief. This one involving star running back Wayne Knight.
The James Madison transfer took a big hit too in the 28-10 rout on Saturday. But informed reporters on Sunday that his injury isn't serious.
“Nothing overly dangerous. He wanted to go back in, and probably could have, but we just didn't want to do it,” Chesney said.
So Chesney kept Knight healthy during that sequence. His Bruins already played efficiently on the ground anyway. UCLA compiled 245 rushing yards with Knight part of the lineup. Except Anthony Woods handled the load in hitting 112 yards on 14 carries.
Woods, Knight and past Cal transfer Jaivian Thomas all scored once following a handoff in the romp inside the Rose Bowl. Their performances helped keep UCLA unbeaten among Big Ten Conference teams at 7-0 overall.

The Bruins are garnering potential top four seed chatter in the College Football Playoffs come December. Especially if the Bruins win out the rest of their games.
Only No. 25 USC rises as the last ranked team left on UCLA's schedule, set for Nov. 28. And the Trojans took a costly loss to Wisconsin that handed coach Lincoln Riley and his team their second defeat of the season. But the 7-0 Bruins tangle with Nevada on Halloween in a non-conference showdown.
