Travis Etienne Jr's trip to injured reserve has turned the New Orleans Saints' backfield into one of the most important fantasy football situations of the week. Etienne suffered a hamstring injury during New Orleans' Week 3 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He was placed on injured reserve Thursday. That means he will miss at least four games. Before the injury, the offseason acquisition was beginning to establish himself as an important piece of Kellen Moore's offense. Now, his absence dramatically changes the workload distribution behind Tyler Shough. For fantasy managers, this is about identifying which Saints backs inherit Etienne's carries, receptions and goal-line opportunities. Managers must also watch Alvin Kamara closely here.

Saints debut on pause

Before his unfortunate trip to injured reserve, Etienne was already showcasing why the Saints made him their marquee offseason acquisition. Early in their 2026 campaign, Etienne supplied New Orleans with a useful combination of rushing and receiving ability. He opened the season with nine carries and seven catches against Detroit. Etienne then continued seeing meaningful work as the Saints managed Kamara's return from a knee injury.

The Week 3 injury arrived after Etienne broke a 16-yard run against Las Vegas. He appeared to grab at his hamstring afterward. He ultimately finished that game with 13 carries for 57 yards and two catches for 13 yards. The injury abruptly halted a workload that had been trending toward greater involvement.

Now, fantasy football managers must plan for a minimum four-game absence. That does not necessarily mean Etienne will miss exactly four games. His eventual return depends on his recovery and the Saints' medical evaluation. However, his roster status should spur his fantasy managers to find another solution immediately.

Alvin Kamara

The most immediate beneficiary is Kamara. He entered 2026 with uncertainty surrounding his workload after the Saints signed Etienne. Kamara's own knee issue kept him sidelined in Week 1. Now, Etienne's absence changes the equation dramatically. New Orleans' official roster now lists Kamara alongside Kendre Miller and CJ Donaldson as the primary healthy backfield options.

That makes Kamara the clear fantasy football player to prioritize. The veteran's receiving ability is particularly important because Shough can benefit from having a dependable check-down option. Kamara's value has always extended beyond rushing volume. A larger snap share should restore the PPR floor that made him such a fantasy staple.

However, fantasy football managers should also avoid assuming Kamara will suddenly receive 25 or 30 touches every week. The Saints have explicitly indicated they expect Kamara and Miller to handle much of the workload. Donaldson will have a defined role of his own.

Still, among the Saints' backs, Kamara has the strongest combination of projected touches. His fantasy stock has undoubtedly received the biggest boost from Etienne's injury.

Waiver wire

The more interesting waiver-wire question is what happens behind Kamara. Miller deserves attention in virtually every league. He has already been part of New Orleans' running back rotation this season and should have an opportunity to absorb additional early-down work.

Donaldson is another name worth monitoring, particularly in deeper formats. He has already demonstrated that the Saints envision a specific role for him, including work near the goal line. That makes him an intriguing touchdown-dependent stash.

The important distinction is that these backs should not all be valued equally. Kamara is the immediate priority. Miller is the strongest complementary stash. Donaldson becomes more interesting in deeper leagues if his role expands.

Etienne's injury is frustrating. That's because his opportunity in New Orleans was only beginning to take shape. However, fantasy football rewards managers who react before the workload becomes obvious.

Kamara should be treated as a weekly starter in PPR formats. Miller should carry meaningful flex appeal, Donaldson is worth monitoring on the waiver wire. The exact split will depend on game script and health.

The Saints cannot replace Etienne with one player. They will likely replace him with a committee. For fantasy managers, though, there is still a clear starting point: Alvin Kamara just became the most valuable piece of the New Orleans backfield again.
