Former quarterback Tony Romo is out at CBS Sports following his DUI plea
Tony Romo’s tenure at CBS Sports alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson has come to an end.
The network announced on Friday that the two sides have mutually agreed to part ways.
”CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.
”JJ Watt will continue to partner with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on our lead NFL announce team for the rest of the season. All other teams remain the same, including Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker and Evan Washburn.”
Romo was placed on indefinite leave by the network over the summer, after he was arrested in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. The arrest came in downtown Milwaukee on July 23, and he was subsequently given three citations in connection with the incident: Operating while under the influence, unsafe passing, and possession of an open container in a moving vehicle.
In September, he pled no contest to the operating while intoxicated charge, through an attorney making the plea in court. He was found guilty and saw his driving privileges revoked for six months, and was ordered to complete an alcohol assessment program, and pay a $784 fine. Failure to pay the fine by November 2 will result in a one-year suspension of his driver’s license.
In addition, the court ordered Romo to install an ignition interlock device on “any vehicle owned, operated or registered” in his name. This device will measure his breath alcohol content to confirm he is not under the influence prior to starting the vehicle.
As noted in the statement from CBS Sports, Romo was part of the NFL coverage team for nine seasons.
