The Tennessee Titans found themselves locked in a tight late-game battle against the Cleveland Browns, needing every play to go right. But when quarterback Cam Ward had a wide-open receiver staring him down in the clutch, things took an unexpected turn, and his postgame explanation was just as candid as the missed throw.
Late in the fourth quarter, Ward spotted tight end Daniel Bellinger breaking open down the seam. It was the exact look Tennessee had dialed up, but Ward ended up sailing the pass well over Bellinger's head, squandering a massive chunk-play opportunity. Speaking to reporters after the game, Ward didn't blame bad footwork or a miscommunication. Instead, he admitted pure excitement got the best of him.
Ward explained that the team had been waiting all afternoon to catch Cleveland in Tampa 2 coverage. When the defensive safety split and the gap opened precisely as designed, he got so hyped seeing the open grass that he completely overshot his target.
Cam Ward said they finally got the coverage they wanted (Tampa 2) on Daniel Bellinger's seam route late and he got excited causing him to overshoot. Ward said next play mentality led to redemption on passes to Elic Ayomanor and Carnell Tate a few plays later. pic.twitter.com/hIKRotgF5R

It was a bizarrely honest admission from a young signal-caller, especially on a day where passing production was hard to come by. Ward struggled to find rhythm against Cleveland's defense, finishing the afternoon 15-of-29 passing for 142 yards and an interception while taking three sacks.
Article Continues BelowFortunately for the Titans, the brutal miss didn't break Ward's composure for long. Relying on a quick “next play mentality,” he bounced right back on the very same drive. Ward flushed the error, regrouped in the huddle, and delivered clutch completions to wide receivers Elic Ayomanor and Carnell Tate a few plays later to move the chains and keep the drive alive.
While overshooting a target because you got overly excited isn't ideal, Ward's ability to shake off mistakes on the fly shows real maturity. Learning to stay cool when defenses give him the coverage he wants will be his next big step.
