The Minnesota Timberwolves had plenty to smile about during their season opener against the Miami Heat, and Rudy Gobert made sure Richard Jefferson felt it.
During ESPN’s broadcast of the Timberwolves’ 131-106 win on Wednesday night in Miami, Jefferson spoke with Gobert on air. The former NBA forward turned analyst noticed the big man’s good mood and asked him about it.
“My only question is, why are you smiling?” Jefferson asked.
Gobert did not miss a beat. “I’m thinking about your bald head,” he said.

The Timberwolves shared the exchange on social media, and it quickly made the rounds. Jefferson, who works alongside Mike Breen and Tim Legler on ESPN’s top NBA broadcast team, has long been known for dishing out jokes on air. This time, he was on the receiving end.
Gobert had good reason to be in high spirits. Minnesota dominated a game that was supposed to be all about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Heat debut.
Antetokounmpo did his part, scoring 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting in his first game since Miami acquired him in a June trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. But Anthony Edwards stole the show, pouring in 45 points and 10 rebounds to set a franchise record for points in a season opener. Edwards had 36 points through three quarters, going 7-of-13 from three, as Minnesota took an 18-point lead into the fourth.
Article Continues BelowLaMelo Ball also shined in his Timberwolves debut, adding 21 points and six assists after arriving in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets. Bam Adebayo chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for Miami in the loss.
The blowout gave the Timberwolves an early statement win against a Heat team hoping Antetokounmpo can turn it into a contender right away. It also gave Gobert, a four-time Defensive Player of the Year, a chance to show off a side of his personality that fans do not always get to see.
Jefferson, for his part, will surely be looking for some payback the next time he crosses paths with Gobert.
Minnesota will look to keep the good vibes going when it hosts its home opener at Target Center on Sunday, Oct. 25.
