Aday Mara did not play much in his NBA debut, but Mark Daigneault made it clear that the rookie’s minutes told only part of the story as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-104 on Tuesday night at Frost Bank Center in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals.

Mara logged just 12 minutes off the bench, but the Thunder head coach came away impressed with what the 21-year-old gave his team.

“It was a great impact. He had probably one of the stretches of the game that was critical,” Daigneault said. “He didn’t seem overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the game.”

Mara finished with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, two rebounds, an assist and a block. He also turned his ankle late in the first quarter shortly after checking in, but he returned after a break in play and appeared to walk it off.

For Daigneault, the performance was a continuation of what he saw throughout the exhibition slate.

“I’m not really surprised with how he’s performed in the preseason. I think he’s proven to be a very impactful player,” Daigneault said. “His minutes weren’t high tonight, but his impact was.”

Mara gave Oklahoma City plenty of reasons for optimism before the regular season. The 7-foot-3 center opened the preseason by going 15-for-15 from the field across his first two games, then posted 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six blocks against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Thunder selected Mara with the 12th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after he helped Michigan win the national championship. He averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.6 blocks last season and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

His debut also came under a cloud. Basket Zaragoza, the Spanish club Mara played for before college, claims he remains under contract and has threatened legal action. The Thunder said no clearance from the club was needed for him to play in the NBA.

On the court, though, Mara has already earned his coach’s confidence.

“I’m only going to trust him more after seeing how he performed in such a high-level game,” Daigneault said.

The Thunder will look to stay unbeaten when they face the Denver Nuggets on Thursday.
