There will be no written report of the UNC investigation

The investigation into the North Carolina football program has concluded. And there will be nothing provided beyond the statement issued on Thursday.

Via The Athletic, the attorney who conducted the investigation said that no written report will be generated.

Nathan Huff said that 60 persons were interviewed, including coach Bill Belichick.

“I had full run of the facility and the people that I needed to do my work, and I was able to do that thoroughly, and I made my recommendations and findings available to my client,” Huff said.

That work resulted in a finding that “certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct.” However, the violations, according to the investigation, were “isolated” and “not a systematic failure.”

There’s no way for anyone on the outside to assess that conclusion without access to the nuts and bolts of the investigation. And while I haven’t researched the relevant requirements of North Carolina law (that’s a lawyerly way of saying, “I don’t know”), it seems that public institutions would be subject to a greater degree of transparency.

All that’s known is something happened — and that it caused or contributed to the resignations of G.M. Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick. So, basically, it was bad enough to force out two key employees, but not bad enough to trigger a finding that there were widespread problems.

The outcome shouldn’t be a surprise. Per The Athletic, an unnamed former staff member told UNC leadership in January 2025 that “this new regime is doing things any way but ‘the Carolina Way’ and there is a need to be very concerned about future investigations, sanctions, and being stripped of wins and/or privileges.”

Still, it would be nice to know what specifically happened to trigger the departures of Michael Lombardi and Steve Belichick, but that apparently sparked no other terminations or resignations. And it remains to be seen whether the experience makes Bill Belichick more likely to move on after the 2026 season.
