The Green Bay Packers missed their opportunity to land Quenton Nelson. They watched the Seattle Seahawks acquire the All-Pro guard for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-rounder. Now, general manager Brian Gutekunst must pivot quickly. Green Bay's offensive line is dealing with injuries and too many moving parts. Jordan Love needs a dependable pocket. Their running game requires more physicality up front. Fortunately, another potential solution may be available: Houston Texans guard Wyatt Teller. A trade for the three-time Pro Bowler could give Green Bay an experienced interior blocker without requiring the same premium investment.

Dangerous complication

Matt LaFleur's team has endured a turbulent opening to the 2026 season. After losing to Minnesota and Atlanta, Green Bay bounced back with victories over the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears. However, a 20-17 loss to Detroit in Week 7 dropped the Packers to 4-3. It also exposed a fresh problem along the offensive line. Starting center Sean Rhyan suffered a high-ankle sprain expected to sideline him for at least four weeks. Backup Jacob Monk also left the Detroit game with an injury. Green Bay was forced to turn to John Williams at center. That highlighted the lack of reliable depth available in an increasingly important position group.

The Packers have already brought in veteran help, including Laken Tomlinson and Kevin Zeitler. However, those moves have not eliminated the uncertainty. With Rhyan sidelined and the line struggling to maintain continuity, Gutekunst cannot afford to assume the existing group will simply figure everything out.

Wyatt Teller

Teller deserves serious consideration because Houston may be willing to move him. The veteran guard signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Texans this offseason. He was supposed to compete for a starting role. Instead, he has largely been pushed into a reserve position. Houston has favored other options along its interior line. Pundits have identified Teller as a potential trade candidate, making him a realistic name for Green Bay to investigate.

Teller is no longer the dominant blocker who earned All-Pro honors earlier in his career. His recent pass protection has actually been a tad inconsistent. Through seven games, he has played 142 offensive snaps, earned a 69.4 overall PFF grade and allowed five pressures, including one sack. His 75.7 run-blocking grade, however, ranks 15th among qualified guards.

That profile makes him an intriguing fit for Green Bay. The Packers need a physical, experienced guard who can compete for meaningful snaps and strengthen the running game. Teller's experience at right guard would also give LaFleur and offensive line coach Adam Stenavich flexibility as they work through the team's injury problems.

Day-three pick

Green Bay should approach Houston with an offer built around a 2027 fifth-round pick. That can potentially be supplemented by a conditional late-round selection. Teller's diminished role could give the Texans a reason to consider moving him. That's especially if they believe their current starters provide a better path forward. The Packers would offer Houston a chance to recoup draft capital from a free-agent signing that has not unfolded as expected.

The Texans are not obligated to accept a modest offer, however. Their offensive line has struggled, too. Keeping an experienced reserve could be valuable if injuries strike. Green Bay should therefore avoid getting drawn into a bidding war or treating Teller as a guaranteed fix. Financially, the move also appears more manageable than the Nelson pursuit. Teller's contract runs through 2027.

Protecting Jordan Love

The Packers' offensive line problems extend beyond one injured center. The group has experienced shuffling and a lack of continuity. Those issues become increasingly dangerous against the NFC's strongest defensive fronts.

Love has the arm talent to carry an offense. However, even elite quarterbacks struggle when pressure arrives immediately up the middle. Improving the interior would give him more time to progress through his reads. It would also allow LaFleur to call a wider range of plays. That could help the running backs find cleaner lanes rather than repeatedly fighting through penetration.

Teller is not a perfect solution. He cannot single-handedly repair every weakness. Still, an experienced guard is a worthwhile target when the alternative is hoping the current patchwork arrangement holds together.

Make the pivot

Missing out on Nelson stings, especially after Green Bay reportedly showed interest in acquiring him. Still, the Packers cannot let one failed pursuit end their search for help. Teller offers a more attainable alternative with experience, physicality, and a potentially reasonable acquisition cost.

Gutekunst should make the call, negotiate firmly, and prioritize protecting Love before the November 10 trade deadline. Green Bay has enough talent to compete. That said, its offensive line must become more dependable for that potential to translate into a deep postseason run. Nelson is headed to Seattle. The Packers need to make sure their next move is not another missed opportunity.
