The New York Rangers are preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Captain JT Miller will lead his teammates into battle this season with expectations around the team somewhat low. That doesn't mean they can't surprise people. Head coach Mike Sullivan sees Miller as being instrumental to their success.

Specifically, there is one aspect of his game that Sullivan believes will be beneficial. The Rangers captain has the ability to produce offensively for his team. But it's the playmaking skill that Miller possesses that makes more of an impact, in Sullivan's view.

“I think (Miller's) playmaking ability is probably undervalued by some,” Sullivan said, via NHL.com. “J.T. sees the ice pretty well. I think he has the ability to distribute the puck. J.T. brings a physical element in a down-low game, a grind game that I think he could drag his linemates into a little bit so they can create some offense in different ways.”

The Rangers did not do well last season, finishing dead last in the Eastern Conference. Miller was productive, scoring 17 goals and 53 points for the Blueshirts. Dating back to 2021-22, Miller is one of eight centers to record three 50+ assist seasons, according to NHL.com.

New York's prized offseason pickup, winger Pavel Dorofeyev, could be a fantastic complement. Dorofeyev is coming off consecutive 35+ goal seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights. He could certainly take advantage of the playmaking Miller provides at the top of the lineup.

The Rangers are not expected to be in playoff contention. However, with the right production from the right players, they could be a contender as soon as this season. Miller's performance will be key for New York in 2026-27.
