The New York Giants and New York Jets are both 1-0, which, believe it or not, is not a common occurence.

The Jets defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-10 yesterday and, later in the evening, their crosstown rivals beat the Dallas Cowboys 28-20. With the victories, both New York football teams are 1-0, which hasn't happened since 2009. Back then, the head coaches were Rex Ryan (Jets) and Tom Coughlin (Giants).

With Ryan and Coughlin at the helm, both teams finished .500 or above in 2009, although only the Jets made the playoffs. The Giants went 8-8 and missed out on a Wild Card spot in the NFC, while, the Jets, in Ryan's first year at the helm, earned an AFC Wild Card bid after going 9-7.

The Jets then went on the road and defeated both the Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers to reach the AFC Championship Game, where they lost to the top-seeded Indianapolis Colts 30-17.

It would turn out to be one of two straight AFC title game bids for the Jets, who similarly lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers the following year. Since that 2010 loss, the Jets have not made it back to the playoffs.

As for the Giants, the 2009 season snapped a four-year streak of playoff appearances, which included a Super Bowl win two years earlier. However, after missing the postseason in 2009 and 2010, Coughlin led the Giants to another Super Bowl victory in February 2012.

Coughlin spent four more seasons with the Giants after that before resigning and ultimately retiring from coaching. Ryan's last season with the Jets came one year earlier, in 2014, and he subsequently became the Buffalo Bills' head coach.

Although they are both 1-0, it seems unlikely that both will improve to 2-0. The Jets host the Green Bay Packers, who are undoubtedly upset after collapsing against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. Meanwhile, the Giants will travel across the country to take on the Los Angeles Rams, whose trip to Australia to play the San Francisco 49ers proved disastrous.
