North Carolina football lost its second member of the Bill Belichick-led staff. Except the latest is his son, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick. The younger Belichick first stepped away on medical leave, but also became linked to a drug use investigation on campus.

Belichick's decision follows general manager Michael Lombardi's exit amid the internal investigation. So now he won't be coaching in UNC's road contest at Clemson.

But Steve Belichick's wife delivered a lengthy statement about her husband's decision. ESPN NFL insider Field Yates helped share the statement online, which includes how the family is “grateful” for their time.

“We are grateful for our time and our opportunity in Chapel Hill. And we are very proud of our influence on the positive direction of the program,” the statement begins. “Our priority will always be to show up with a healthy and strong mind for ourselves and our 5 children. We are humbled by the relationships that have been fostered here in North Carolina. And would like to thank each and every person that has positively impacted our experience.”

But the wife clarified speculation involving the younger Belichick.

“Unfortunately there is misinformation and speculation about our own situation,” the wife added. “We strongly encourage anyone in need of support to utilize their resources in order to achieve the best version of themselves.”

So 2-0 North Carolina likely will lean into the six-time Super Bowl winning head coach to lead the defense Saturday. Belichick also faces Dabo Swinney of Clemson, who's on the hot seat too. But Belichick can lift UNC to a stunning 3-0 start with a win.
