Earlier in the week, the Dallas Cowboys picked up a major reinforcement on the defensive side of the ball when they acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Cowboys executive Stephen Jones, the acquisition of Porter from the Steelers “checks a big box” for the club, addressing a major need while also allowing the team to maximize the strengths of its existing cornerbacks.

“This definitely checks a big box for us,” Jones said via Jon Machota on X, formerly known as Twitter. “This will allow (Shavon Revel) to continue to develop and learn from one of the best. (They) have the same body type. They’re the same type of players. “Certainly, I think it’s (also) good for (DaRon Bland). We can put Bland to the field (side) where he can make plays on the ball, which is what he does best. Put Porter in the boundary against some of the top receivers in the league, and he’s proven he can do a good job against those guys.

“It certainly checks a huge box for us,” he continued. “But I think it also makes a statement as to what the organization, the coaching staff, the players, we feel like we got a great football team.”

Meanwhile, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said that the club would love if it he were able to play in their next game, which is against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

“We'd like him to play, but we'll see how the week goes. I think he's excited about the opportunity to maybe play, but we'll see how the rest of the week goes. But it was a good start today,” Schottenheimer said.
