Victor Wembanyama apparently isn't ready to revisit the San Antonio Spurs' heartbreaking NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks. Nearly five months after falling short of a championship, the superstar center reportedly remains reluctant to discuss the experience, even with the new NBA season underway.
French basketball reporter Maxine Aubin recently shared what he learned from conversations with Wembanyama's representatives. The Spurs star's reluctance suggests the disappointment of losing his first NBA Finals appearance still weighs heavily on him.
“I talked to his people, to his agents, and they said basically he does not want to talk about the finals,” Aubin said in remarks shared by NBABase.
“From what I understand now, this is still something that hurts him, what happened in the finals. He does not really want to talk about it yet.”
San Antonio lost the 2026 championship series to New York in five games despite Wembanyama averaging 26 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks.
The defeat was particularly painful after the Spurs squandered double-digit leads in multiple games. Their most devastating collapse game came in Game 4, when the Knicks erased a 29-point deficit to secure a 107-106 victory.
Article Continues BelowWembanyama previously acknowledged experiencing difficult nights following the series. During September's media day, he explained that dealing with those emotions was part of moving forward.
His reported reluctance to revisit the Finals doesn't necessarily mean he has stopped learning from the experience. He has continued working on his game while preparing San Antonio for another championship push.
For the Spurs, the challenge is turning that disappointment into progress without allowing last season's ending to define their next opportunity.
