NORMAN, Okla. -- Bo Aldridge scored 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting, and East Texas A&M shocked Oklahoma with a 68-64 season-opening win on Monday night.
The Lions, selected to finish last in the 12-team Southland Conference preseason poll this season, received 15 points each from Mohamed Diakite and Alonzo Dodd.
East Texas A&M, formerly known as Texas A&M -- Commerce, never trailed after taking a 13-12 lead with 12:59 before halftime. This is only the fifth season that the Lions are in Division I.
"The only thing I know to do is, apologize to the fan base, and get better," Sooners coach Porter Moser said after the loss. "But I apologize to every single person that came in. The things you do, in a game like this, in basketball, that get you beat, we did. We had 15 turnovers, and 15 missed free throws."
Oklahoma closed as a 28.5-point favorite at DraftKings. According to ESPN Research, in assessing point spreads for more than 100,000 Division I games over the last 30 years, this would be the second largest upset in that span. In December of 2022, Eastern Illinois, a 30.5-point underdog, knocked off Iowa.
Moser, 58, who is in his sixth season with the Sooners after a sterling run at Loyola Chicago that included a Final Four appearance in 2018, reached 20 wins in each of the last three seasons. But he's only been to one NCAA Tournament with Oklahoma, and on Monday night, he heard "Fire Moser" chants in the stands at the Lloyd Noble Center.
"We played on our heels all night," Moser said. "They got us on our heels, and we stayed on our heels. ... It was not good enough, and that's on me."
Oklahoma tied it at 58-all and 60-all with 2:51 remaining but never got past. Aldridge made two free throws with three seconds left to play to seal it.
"I just feel like they sped us up a little bit," Sooners forward Derrion Reid said. "And as a team, you can't get sped up. We just have to play our game, no matter who we're playing."
Pop Isaacs scored 15 points, and Reid scored 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Sooners.
It was East Texas A&M's first win in the three-game series between the two teams. Oklahoma beat the Lions 84-56 on Nov. 21, 2024, and 87-59 on Dec. 1, 1970.
Oklahoma has an SEC-most five players on the roster who have appeared in 100 or more games: Tae Davis (134), Duke Brennan (133), B.J. Edwards (110), Xzayvier Brown (104) and Isaacs (100).
Brown didn't play on Monday due to a lower-body injury.
Oklahoma entered having won 22 of its past 23 season openers, with the lone defeat during the stretch coming in 2022-23 to Sam Houston, 52-51, in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners also entered the season with 30 consecutive non-conference wins at home.
"Should we have won," Moser asked the reporters in his postgame media availability. "Yes, we should have found a way to win."
