The Ottawa Senators signed star winger Drake Batherson to a contract extension on Tuesday. This contract is the largest handed out in franchise history. Batherson signed for eight years and will make $10.75 million per season.

It was the final major piece of business for Ottawa to handle this offseason. With training camp about to start, it was imperative to sign the star winger to a new contract. In his press conference on Tuesday, Batherson remained quite humble, especially when comparing himself to the likes of Sidney Crosby.

“No, no. I definitely don't deserve to be making more money than him,” the Senators star said when asked about the matter, via BarDown.

This is the reality for the Senators winger, though there is a caveat. Batherson's contract kicks in next season. This year, he will be making noticeably less than Crosby. The Penguins legend is an unrestricted free agent next summer, so Batherson is set to make more than him at this time, regardless.

Batherson is certainly worthy of a long-term commitment, though. He has emerged as one of Ottawa's most reliable scoring wingers. He finished second on the team this past season with 33 goals and 71 points. Only Tim Stutzle had more goals and points than Batherson for Ottawa in 2025-26.

The Senators have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs two years in a row. They are certainly hoping to make it three years running in 2027. With Batherson signed, the team can now focus entirely on the season ahead. Ottawa begins its 2026-27 campaign on October 3 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
