The Seattle Seahawks are handing their offense to Drew Lock while Sam Darnold recovers from his unusual soft-tissue injury. But that doesn't mean Jalen Milroe can't join the fun.
Darnold will miss Seattle's Week 2 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals and could potentially remain sidelined in Week 3, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Seahawks haven't placed Darnold on short-term injured reserve, however, suggesting they don't anticipate an extended absence.
Lock will take over in the meantime after completing 16-of-22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's season-opening 13-10 win over the New England Patriots.
ESPN's Dan Graziano believes there could still be an opportunity for Milroe.
âÂÂI'm personally interested to see whether they put in anything specific for Jalen Milroe in terms of plays or packages that take advantage of his running ability and maybe give their offense a little bit extra juice,â Graziano wrote.
Why not? Milroe isn't expected to challenge Lock for the starting job while Darnold is sidelined. But with Milroe likely active as Seattle's QB2, the Seahawks could find creative ways to utilize one of the most athletic quarterbacks in football.
His running ability immediately presents problems for a defense, particularly around the goal line and in short-yardage situations. Milroe is also capable of making defenses pay through the air if they become too concerned with his legs.
Seattle clearly trusts Lock to keep the offense afloat until Darnold returns. That doesn't mean the Seahawks can't sprinkle in some Milroe.
If they're willing to get creative, Darnold's absence could provide the perfect opportunity to finally see what Milroe can add to this offense.
