Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has seemingly seen enough of Australia after a lopsided loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Los Angeles opened the 2026 season in Melbourne and was handed a 27-7 defeat by San Francisco. The Rams had arrived around 24 hours before kickoff at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while the 49ers had spent a full week in Australia ahead of the matchup.

When McVay was asked about the trip again Thursday, he joked that he would rather not see Australia on Los Angeles' schedule again.

“It's almost like you try to do the Men in Black thing where you say, ‘Hey, I don't remember what happened. That was so long ago,'” said McVay. “We're not playing in Australia ever again, I hope. Not because it wasn't a great atmosphere, that'll get taken out of context.”

McVay's comments came as the Rams look to move forward from their 20-point loss. The short stay in Melbourne had become a big talking point following the game, particularly because of the contrast between Los Angeles' arrival one day before kickoff and San Francisco's week-long stay.

The travel concerns were also raised outside the Rams. Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, who has experience traveling between Australia and the United States, suggested teams should arrive earlier, while Denver Broncos punter Jeremy Crawshaw warned about the effects of the journey.

Still, Los Angeles players did not universally point to travel as the reason for the defeat. Quarterback Matthew Stafford said he felt ready to play, while wide receiver Davante Adams was also direct about separating the trip from the football result.

For McVay, the focus is now on Week 2 when the New York Giants' visit to SoFi Stadium on Monday night. He said he likes the way the Rams have prepared and wants the team to maintain its focus, concentration and competitive edge heading into the matchup.

Although Los Angeles has 16 games remaining on its schedule, the Rams will be without star pass rusher Myles Garrett for their next challenge after he was placed on injured reserve Thursday following surgery on his left knee.
