Russell Westbrook’s next Los Angeles appearance will center on what he has given his hometown, both through basketball and his work with young people.
The city will recognize the retired NBA star on Friday, Oct. 9, with a ceremony at City Hall, KTLA reports. Councilwoman Heather Hutt, who represents District 10, will present Westbrook with a Council certificate acknowledging his playing career and community contributions.
The presentation begins at 10 a.m. and follows Westbrook’s August announcement that he would retire after 18 NBA seasons. The former UCLA player earned nine All-Star selections and spent portions of his career with the Lakers and Clippers.
His retirement message on X captured the finality of that decision.
“Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end,” Westbrook wrote. “You had to be there. And now it’s over.”
For the Los Angeles native, Friday’s recognition brings his professional accomplishments and hometown commitments into the same room.
