On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints are playing an NFL game in Paris, France. This is the first league game to be played in the famous French city. It likely won't be the last, either.

“NFL already planning to return to Paris,” ESPN's Adam Schefter posted to X, formerly Twitter.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been aggressively pushing for more games in Europe, and other international areas. The league is seeing an increase in popularity outside the United States.

“NFL Commish Goodell at Sunday breakfast sponsored by Saints owner Gayle Benson today said he had “zero doubt” NFL would be back in Paris with another game and also said it was “likely” there would be an international NFL franchise but…did not say when or where,” league insider Joe Browne posted to X.

While there are professional sports franchises in Canada, no European country holds a franchise in the four major American sports. Those sports are: football, basketball, baseball and hockey. If the NFL were to pick up an international team, that would truly be groundbreaking.

The league is also looking at extending the regular season schedule. That would allow each NFL team to play a game in an international city each year. Talks are ongoing, but the NFL Players Association has pushed back on that.

The league had to adjust their plans for the game in Paris on Sunday. There are ongoing protests in the city.

“On Saturday, the league announced the closure of its “NFL House” in Paris as the French capital is gearing up for more demonstrations. Earlier this month, Parisians began rebelling against the rising cost of living and poor school conditions. Those protests, however, have turned violent, with stores being looted, property being burned, and continued clashes with police,” CBS Sports reported.

The Saints and Steelers are playing at time of writing.
