The Detroit Red Wings named Shawn Horcoff their interim general manager on Tuesday. The former player joined Detroit's front office back in 2016-17. He has held roles such as director of player development and assistant general manager in Detroit.

Now, Horcoff is tasked with running the Red Wings on an interim basis. There is a ton of uncertainty around this team. Dylan Larkin has requested a trade. Alex DeBrincat is in need of a contract extension. Simon Edvinsson doesn't have a contract for this coming season as of now.

There has been some talk about a potential rebuild in Detroit. The Red Wings had worked to come out of a rebuild under Steve Yzerman, but have not turned the corner. As far as Horcoff is concerned, though, this will not be happening.

“A rebuild, to me, is out of the question,” Horcoff said, via NHL.com. “We have too many good players in that lineup. Listen, we’ve been close. The last three years in a row, we’ve been really close.”

The Red Wings have come close to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in recent seasons. However, they have suffered repeated late-season collapses to fall short of the postseason. With so much potential roster turnover, going back into a rebuild certainly makes sense.

Horcoff is not interested in doing so, though. He is fighting to become the permanent general manager in Detroit. And this team is not all that far off, if everything goes well. How the new decision maker in the Motor City elects to proceed with his vision is certainly worth monitoring for Detroit fans.
