To say Sonny Gray was excited to leave the Boston Red Sox's elimination game against the New York Yankees after just 70 pitches might just be the overstatement of the year.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday after his exit spurred by a 9-2 thrashing by New York, Gray declared himself the best pitcher in baseball and wished he had a longer opportunity to prove it.

“I'm the best pitcher in the American League going through the order for a third time,” Gray declared. “I would've liked to live or die with me in that moment, but that's the competitor I am. You can probably ask the guys in here if they felt the same way. I felt strong. I felt confident. I felt convicted. But what are you going to do?”
