Sonny Gray is back on the free-agent market after his mutual option was declined, giving contenders a chance to add an experienced starter. After stops with the Athletics, Yankees, Twins, and Red Sox, Gray enjoyed some of his best seasons in the NL with the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals.
A return to the National League could make sense. Gray offers a contender an established veteran, and several teams need another dependable arm. Atlanta, Chicago and San Diego stand out as potential fits, though these destinations are presented in no particular order.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves were among the league's strongest teams in 2026, but their NLDS loss to the Dodgers exposed their need for starting-pitching depth. Chris Sale remained the staff's most established option, while Tyler Mahle helped after arriving during the season. However, injuries to Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach left Atlanta short of the depth needed for a postseason run.
With Sale getting older, Atlanta needs another proven starter rather than relying on everything going right with its current group. Grant Holmes and Bryce Elder can contribute, but the Braves need more certainty behind Sale if they want another deep October run.
Gray would give Atlanta a reliable option near the top of the rotation. Pairing him with Sale would give the Braves two experienced starters capable of setting the tone in a playoff series. Atlanta has the roster to contend; adding Gray could address a weakness that showed up when the stakes were highest.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs' NL Wild Card loss to the Padres reinforced the need for another quality starter. Chicago had one of baseball's best offenses, but its lineup could not make up for the lack of production in a short postseason series. Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga are not enough to give the Cubs the dependable rotation they need over a full season and into October.
Imanaga was not used against San Diego, while Cade Horton is working toward a return and remains a major part of the club's future. Chicago cannot count on Horton being available for the entire season, however, and questions remain about how the rest of the rotation will come together. Edward Cabrera is another option, but the Cubs need an established starter who can take on a major role. Clay Holmes already declined his option.
Gray could fill that need and give Chicago a legitimate frontline presence. He would bring experience and consistency to a rotation that needs both. With the Cubs' offense capable of carrying games, adding Gray could make them a more balanced team and improve their chances of avoiding another early postseason exit.
San Diego Padres
San Diego may have the most immediate need for Gray, particularly if Michael King leaves in free agency. King declined his player option, leaving the Padres with the possibility of losing one of their most important starters. If that happens, the rotation will need a major addition.
Article Continues BelowNick Pivetta has an opt-out, although his health could factor into his decision. Joe Musgrove is coming off his return from injury, while Randy Vasquez and JP Sears are also in the mix. That group needs more proven depth, especially with questions about what the rotation will look like over a full 2027 season.
Gray would be a valuable fit because San Diego needs veteran stability. If King returns, the combination of King, Gray, and a healthy Pivetta would give the Padres a strong top of the rotation. If King departs, Gray could help fill that vacancy and give the club a reliable arm to build around.
The Padres could still use a left-handed starter, but that should not stop them from pursuing Gray. He would address an immediate need and give San Diego another experienced option as it looks to remain in contention.
All three clubs have reasons to consider Gray. Atlanta needs depth behind Sale, Chicago needs a frontline starter to complement its offense, and San Diego could need a replacement for King. Gray's experience in both leagues makes each destination worth watching as he looks for his next opportunity.
