The Los Angeles Rams took care of business against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, but Sean McVay and team president Kevin Demoff apparently have very different views on the crosstown matchup.
After the Rams’ 24-9 win at SoFi Stadium, McVay was asked whether he considers the Chargers a rival. His answer was short and to the point.
“Kevin Demoff does. I don’t,” McVay said, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.
Demoff, for his part, did not hide his excitement about the result. The Rams president celebrated on X with a GIF of Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy from “Anchorman” saying, “That’s amazing,” which ESPN’s Adam Schefter later shared.
McVay’s comments are not surprising. The Rams and Chargers have both called Los Angeles home since relocating about a decade ago and now share SoFi Stadium, but they rarely see each other. The NFL schedule pairs the two teams only about once every four years, and Sunday’s game was just their second meeting since the stadium opened in 2020.
Their facilities are also far apart, with the Rams practicing in the western San Fernando Valley and the Chargers based more than 30 miles away in El Segundo.
McVay also made it clear before the game that he was not overlooking the winless Chargers.
“I really couldn’t care less what the record says,” McVay said last week. “I see a team that’s really good. They’ve had a chance to win a lot of these games.”
The Chargers made it a game for a half. They led 9-3 behind three Cameron Dicker field goals before Kyren Williams punched in a 1-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to give Los Angeles a 10-9 halftime lead.
Article Continues BelowThe Rams took over from there. Blake Corum broke free for a 23-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, and Matthew Stafford found Puka Nacua for an 18-yard score to make it 24-9. The defense did the rest, intercepting the Chargers twice and recording two sacks while holding them scoreless after halftime.
The win improved the Rams to 4-4 and gave them their second straight victory. The Chargers, meanwhile, remain winless.
Whether McVay calls it a rivalry or not, the Rams now hold an 8-6 edge in the all-time series. They will visit the Washington Commanders next Sunday.
