It used to be “The Battle of the Bay” but with the Raiders far removed from Oakland, Sunday’s meeting of the Raiders and the 49ers is simply Las Vegas (4-4) vs. San Francisco (6-1). The Niners sit atop the NFC West while the Raiders sit third in the AFC West but just a single game out of the final playoff position.
The Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak last Sunday rallying for a 38-33 win over the Jets in New York. Kirk Cousins threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Brock Bowers caught seven balls including two for touchdowns and Mike Washington Jr. ran for 83 yards. Cousins has been a bit of a revelation for the Raiders playing better than he has in the past couple of years. The veteran has thrown for 2,124 yards including 19 touchdowns against only five interceptions.
Somewhat under the radar, the 49ers return from their bye week with a three-game lead in what was billed in the preseason as the best division in the NFL. When last we saw San Francisco, the Niners were on the short end of a 29-20 game against the Falcons. Brock Purdy was an MVP candidate last season and is back in the mix this season having thrown for 1,748 yards including 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Christian McCaffrey is having another banner season, rushing for 389 yards and catching Purdy passes for 251 yards. San Francisco is still a MASH unit on defense, but DeForest Buckner is expected to suit up for his first game back with his original team after being acquired last week from the Colts.
This rivalry’s history is remarkably close: the 49ers own an 8-7 edge in 15 regular-season meetings. San Francisco has won four of the past five matchups and each of the last two, including a 34-3 rout in 2018 and a memorable 37-34 overtime victory in Las Vegas on Jan. 1, 2023; the Raiders’ most recent victory is not so recent: a 24-13 upset of the 49ers in Oakland in 2014.
Sunday’s revival of the rivalry carries considerably more than regional nostalgia: Las Vegas can continue their surprising playoff push and climb above .500 with an upset, while San Francisco has an opportunity to respond to its first loss, protect its unbeaten home record and reinforce its position atop a competitive NFC West.
The 49ers are averaging 28.1 points while allowing just 19.9 per game. Las Vegas has been far more volatile, scoring a healthy 27.6 points per game but surrendering 28.8.
Let’s dive further into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Raiders and the 49ers:
- Moneyline: NBC Sports is staying away from a play on the Moneyline.
- Spread: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Jets +9.5.
- Total: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Game Total UNDER 52.5.
Here’s why the Game Total UNDER 52.5 is the best bet:
San Francisco’s defense is the anchor. The 49ers rank 2nd in yards per play allowed (5.17), 2nd in yards per carry allowed (3.48), 2nd in yards per reception allowed (10.01), 2nd in rushing touchdowns allowed (0.43 per game), 5th in yards allowed (326.43 per game), 5th in rushing yards allowed (89.0 per game), 6th in points allowed (19.86 per game), and 7th in touchdown percentage allowed (2.94%). They’ve allowed just 13 touchdowns all season (7th-fewest). The situational numbers are damning for the Over. The 49ers have allowed rushes of 10+ yards on just 5 of 174 carries (3%) this season — best in the NFL — and they’re undefeated (6-0) when allowing fewer than 10 rushes of four or more yards since 2025. Las Vegas, meanwhile, has run successful plays on just 33% of rush attempts since 2025 — worst in the NFL — and 30% in the second half, also worst. They’re one-dimensional, and one-dimensional offenses stall against elite defenses.
