PSL 2027 to clash with IPL for third consecutive year, scheduled for March 18 to May 2

The PCB confirmed the 12th edition of the Pakistan Super League after a majority of franchises voted for the March-May window over email.

The Pakistan Super League will overlap with the Indian Premier League for the third year running after the Pakistan Cricket Board officially confirmed that the tournament's 12th edition will take place from March 18 to May 2, 2027.

Following a governing council meeting in which no agreement could be reached on the scheduling window, the PCB circulated a preference poll to all eight franchises by email. The majority backed the March-May slot over the alternative of January and February, and the board has now formalised that choice.

The decision means PSL 2027 will again run concurrently with the IPL, continuing a pattern that began in 2025 when ICC commitments forced the tournament out of its traditional February-March window for the first time since the inaugural edition in 2016.

Why was the January-February window ruled out?

The governing council meeting was convened partly because of concerns raised by Walee Technologies, which controls the PSL broadcast rights through to 2029 and also holds ownership of one of the two newly admitted franchises, Rawalpindiz. Walee Technologies contended that most advertisers exhaust their marketing and television budgets during Ramadan, leaving broadcasters with limited commercial revenue in the post-Ramadan window that the current scheduling creates. With Ramadan in 2027 expected to begin in early February and conclude in early March, the 2027 edition will once again be staged after the holy month, repeating the pattern of the previous two seasons.

Despite the commercial case for moving to January and February, that option was judged logistically unviable. Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi, three of the four venues that have traditionally hosted the PSL, all sit in Punjab, where dense fog during winter months severely reduces visibility and creates significant operational difficulties. The governing council further noted that scheduling the knockout stages of the tournament inside Ramadan would present its own challenges, even though the 2024 edition had navigated a comparable situation.

What is the venue and scheduling background for PSL 12?

The PSL ran in February and March from its first edition in 2016 right through to the 2024 season. The move to an April-May calendar began in 2025, driven by two successive ICC events: the Champions Trophy, which Pakistan hosted, and the T20 World Cup staged across India and Sri Lanka, both of which occupied the earlier window.

Since the tournament was relocated entirely to Pakistan in 2020, having previously been held or jointly hosted in the UAE, its primary venues have been Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi. Faisalabad and Peshawar were brought in as additional venues for PSL 10, but PSL 11 was scaled back to Lahore and Karachi alone after the government introduced fuel-preservation measures in response to the West Asia crisis. That edition was also played without spectators, with the exception of the final. The PCB's official media release confirming the 2027 window made no reference to which venues will be used for PSL 12.
