When the Broncos changed offensive playcallers this offseason, it guaranteed a lot of attention would be paid to how the unit fared with offensive coordinator Davis Webb calling the shots instead of head coach Sean Payton.

The early returns have not been great. The Broncos are 27th in points and yards after a 2-2 start that has featured plenty of questions about whether Payton will be taking the job back. On Wednesday, Payton was asked at his press conference whether four games are a long enough time to evaluate Webb’s performance and his answer pivoted to other matters having greater importance than who sends in a play.

“I think our focus needs to be more on the specific and the detail of each play regardless,” Payton said. “I think Davis is very fast and quick and understands what we’re doing. I appreciate the question, but I think that the most important job I have is really evaluating the whys. I think collectively, we all, after a game, and after a four-game sample size, certainly this isn’t championship football, what we see. How quickly can we correct those things?”

Payton returned to the importance of details several times when discussing the team’s offensive performance and said at one point that the team has to “become experts in the detail” in order to perform at the “championship football” level they want to reach this season. That does not preclude a change on the operations side, but it doesn’t sound like one is imminent in Denver.
