The Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday added another pitching option, claiming right-hander Jose Urquidy off waivers from the Chicago White Sox after starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo was placed on the injured list Tuesday with left shoulder inflammation.

To create room for Urquidy on the 40-man roster, the Phillies transferred right-hander Caleb Kilian to the 60-day injured list, a move that likely ends his 2026 season. Chicago had designated Urquidy for assignment on Sept. 15 after recalling left-hander Noah Schultz.

Urquidy, 31, has appeared in 11 games between the Pittsburgh Pirates and White Sox this season, working primarily as a long reliever while making one start. He has recorded a 5.28 ERA over 29 innings, with a 16% strikeout rate and 5.3% walk rate.

His season began in Pittsburgh, where he posted an 8.53 ERA and -0.6 bWAR across five appearances and 6.1 innings. His 4.20 FIP during that stretch suggested his underlying results were better than his ERA indicated. After Chicago acquired him on July 26 in a trade for right-hander Felix Doroteo, Urquidy made six appearances, including one start, and logged 22.2 innings with a 4.37 ERA and 0.3 bWAR.

Urquidy has also spent much of 2026 in Triple-A, where he made 20 starts and threw 95.2 innings. He produced a 3.48 ERA, 20.8% strikeout rate and 5.3% walk rate in those outings.

The veteran previously had a larger role with the Houston Astros. From 2019 through 2022, he accumulated 342 innings over 63 appearances, including 60 starts, while compiling a 3.74 ERA, 20.3% strikeout rate and 5.2% walk rate. His career was interrupted by Tommy John surgery, which cost him most of the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Philadelphia now has a four-man rotation consisting of Cristopher Sqnchez, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter following Luzardo's placement on the IL. Other options for the Phillies include Alan Rangel, who owns a 5.58 ERA in Triple-A, and Nestor Cortes, who is working back from last year's arm surgery and has made two rehab appearances this month.

Urquidy could therefore provide innings through a spot start or a bulk-relief role. He has not pitched since Sept. 8, giving Philadelphia another available arm for the final stretch.

Luzardo is eligible to return Sept. 27, the final day of the regular season, but Urquidy cannot pitch in the postseason because the Phillies acquired him after Sept. 1.
