Penn State football endured another frustrating night on Friday as the Nittany Lions suffered a dissappointing 34-13 loss against Northwestern in the first game played at the Wildcats’ new Ryan Field. The loss marked Penn State’s second consecutive defeat during Matt Campbell’s first season leading the program, and fans already began losing their mind.
The Nittany Lions began the season with considerable attention surrounding Campbell’s arrival, but their recent struggles have quickly raised questions and concerns among the Penn State fan base.
The latest loss has put Campbell under significant scrutiny from a Penn State fan base that expected improvement after his arrival, and many did not hesitate to demand his job.
“Get this [expletives] guy outta here and start over,” one fan wrote.
“Yes, fire Matt Campbell after this season, barring an incredible turnaround. Don’t be out of touch. Chances he’s coming back from this, at this point, 10%,” a comment read.
“It’s year 1, 5 games in, and we already know that Matt Campbell is not the guy. Hard to do honestly but here we are. Fire Pat Kraft and let the new AD decide who should be new HC,” one fan demanded.

Northwestern controlled the game from the opening stages and exposed significant weaknesses for Penn State on both sides of the football. The Wildcats finished the night with 506 total yards, including 413 rushing yards, while the Nittany Lions managed just 291 total yards and were held to only 48 yards on the ground.
The loss represents another major setback for Penn State after the Nittany Lions previously fell 24-20 to Wisconsin. With back-to-back defeats, Penn State has now fallen to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play.
Penn State will look to halt its losing streak when the Nittany Lions take on USC.
