The New Orleans Pelicans handed the Memphis Grizzlies their first loss of the season on Monday night, and Derik Queen made sure everyone at FedExForum knew how he felt about it.

As he headed into the tunnel after the Pelicans’ 135-134 overtime win, Queen was caught on video yelling, “Whoop that trick!” via Dodson on X.

The jab was a pointed one. “Whoop That Trick,” the song from the 2005 Memphis-set film “Hustle & Flow,” has long served as the Grizzlies’ home rallying cry at FedExForum. Queen turned it right back on Memphis after silencing the crowd.

The second-year big man had plenty of reason to be fired up. Queen finished with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, along with seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block, as New Orleans knocked off the NBA’s last remaining undefeated team.

It was a back-and-forth battle that needed an extra period to decide. The teams were tied at 124 at the end of regulation, and Memphis appeared to have the upper hand late in overtime when Ty Jerome drew a foul on Karlo Matkovic on a go-ahead drive to put the Grizzlies up 134-133 with 18.8 seconds left. The Pelicans had one more answer, though, and held on for the one-point win.

Jerome did everything he could to keep the Grizzlies perfect. The guard poured in 40 points on 14-of-22 shooting, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, to go with five rebounds and five assists.

New Orleans got contributions up and down the lineup. Zion Williamson led the way with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Matkovic matched him with 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including five 3-pointers. Trey Murphy III chipped in 18 points and five assists, and the Pelicans outscored Memphis 62-54 in the paint.

The victory continued a turnaround for the Pelicans, who opened the season with four straight losses. New Orleans has now won three in a row, beating the Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks before taking down Memphis, to improve to 3-4.

The Grizzlies, meanwhile, fell to 6-1 but still sit atop the Western Conference standings.

Queen and the Pelicans will look to keep their momentum going when they host the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. They will see the Grizzlies again on Nov. 13 in New Orleans, and Queen’s postgame message should give that rematch some extra juice.
